Acoustic Design & Build

Acoustic design integrated with construction.

Acoustic design integrated with construction.

Acoustic performance is rarely achieved through products alone. Successful outcomes depend on how structure, materials, services and construction details work together as a system.

Nicholas Marriott works as an acoustic consultant, acoustic designer and builder, bringing together architectural acoustic design, engineering insight and practical construction knowledge to deliver spaces where sound performance is realised in the built environment.

APPROACH

Design, detailing and construction considered as one process.

ENGAGEMENT MODELS

Cost-plus delivery or consulting and project management with the client’s builder.

PROJECT TYPES

Studios, listening rooms, residential renovations, theatres and specialist spaces.

DESIGN INTENT

Carried through to site.

Particularly suited to recording studios, listening rooms, residential environments and architectural projects where acoustic performance must be integrated into the design and construction of the building itself.

Why it matters

Why design and construction must work together

Acoustic problems often arise when well-intentioned designs are altered during construction, or when materials and junctions are installed without a clear understanding of their acoustic role.

By working across both acoustic design and construction delivery, Nicholas helps ensure that acoustic systems are integrated with architectural design, compatible with construction methods and materials, and capable of delivering the intended acoustic performance.

Project engagement

How projects can be delivered

Projects can be undertaken in two ways depending on the client, the builder involved and how closely the construction phase needs to be managed.

COST-PLUS DELIVERY

Design & Build (Cost-Plus)

In this model Nicholas effectively acts as the builder and manages the construction of the acoustic works on a cost-plus basis. Builders, trades and specialist installers may either be selected by Nicholas or agreed with the client, with Nicholas responsible for managing the delivery of the acoustic systems and coordinating the construction work on site.

CONSULTING ROLE

Acoustic Consulting & Project Management

If a client already has a builder or construction team in place, Nicholas can remain engaged as the acoustic consultant and project manager. In this role he works alongside the builder, trades and installers to guide the implementation of the acoustic design and ensure the intended acoustic performance is achieved.

Both approaches allow the acoustic strategy, construction detailing and specialist installations to be managed as a coordinated system so the finished space performs as intended.

SERVICES

Design & build services

A design and build approach is particularly valuable where acoustic performance is central to the function of the space and must be resolved through both detailing and construction.

Studio acoustic design

Design strategies for recording studios, control rooms, rehearsal spaces and critical listening environments.

Acoustic design for residential renovations

Acoustic design integrated with renovations, specialist rooms, media rooms and higher-performance homes.

Architectural acoustic detailing

System thinking around structure, linings, junctions, services and tolerances so acoustic intent can be built properly.

Specialist installation management

Oversight of acoustic systems, treatments and specialist works where build quality directly affects final performance.

Project team integration

Collaboration with architects, interior designers, builders, installers and consultants to maintain performance through delivery.

Before installation

Why clients should not go to installers first

Acoustic installers can be valuable in the delivery phase, but performance problems often begin when products or systems are selected before the acoustic strategy has been properly resolved. Isolation, room acoustics, materials, junctions and service penetrations need to work as a coordinated system.

Beginning with design helps avoid expensive rework, mismatched products and construction decisions that compromise the final result. Nicholas works from acoustic strategy through to construction delivery so the build can follow a clear performance brief rather than relying on product-led decisions alone.

On-site consultation

Need clarity before design or construction begins?

Many clients arrive with symptoms — noise, echo, vibration or isolation issues — but the underlying acoustic cause is not always clear. An on-site acoustic consultation helps identify what is actually happening, what level of intervention may be needed, and whether the next step is design, detailing, testing or construction advice.
